It is the middle of the Civil War and things have gotten ugly in Blaineton, New Jersey. Maggie never thought the Second Street boarding house would be burned to the ground. Nor did she consider that her husband Eli’s print shop, home to The Gazette penny weekly, would suffer the same fate, and that Nate would be beaten because of his race. But the abolitionist sympathies of Maggie and those in her boarding house have made them a target for Copperhead forces. When the violence gets worse, Eli’s sisters offer them a chance to escape and help them in aiding runaway slaves escape the war. But first, the family must relocate to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Risking the move, they hope to find some badly-needed peace.
However, peace is in short supply and trouble is constantly at their heels. Newspaperman Eli and reporter/photographer Chester Carson are off covering the war. Eli’s absence creates a wedge between himself and Maggie as both of them keep secrets from the other. Meanwhile, Starting over in a new place is not easy for those left in Gettysburg. They need to find new sources of income as they adjust to the bustling town. Just as they start to feel as if they are settling in, new and disturbing rumors start to fly about an impending invasion by the Confederate army.
